Social Connection
"All is connected… no one thing can change by itself." PAUL HAWKEN
Positive social connections and relationships affect physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Research shows that the single most important predictor of human happiness and a long life is having strong social connections.
Our goal is to help you get connected with social networks that foster/enable a healthy LIFESTYLE, and also strengthen other relationships so you can thrive.

THE POWER OF SOCIAL CONNECTION
We are innately social beings - truly thriving when we engage and work together. Having vibrant social connections is a vital component for establishing a healthy lifestyle. Instead of pursuing more followers on social media, your goal is to build strong bonds with 4-6 people - ones who genuinely love and support you and have your back.

FORMING NEW SOCIAL CONNECTIONS
Volunteer: local animal shelters, a community center, a senior center, a school and more.
Connect with a community resource center to find local options for connecting
Find online communities with those who share the same interests.
Join a religious or spiritual group.
Register for a fitness class
If you're into gardening, volunteer at a local community / demo garden.
Participate in an arts and crafts program
Go to a local sports event, music performance, lecture or art display.
Attend community celebrations like parades or walks
Take a course at your local library or community college
Ask your employer for ways to increase social connections at work (mentorships, coaching)

STRENGTHENING EXISTING SOCIAL CONNECTIONS
Take more time to connect with the people you see a lot during the day / week.
As much as possible, stay positive while connecting with others.
Share new experiences.
Make and spend time with others.
Be there for those who need you.
Be flexible, supportive and excited about what others are doing in their lives.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND DEPRESSION
While technology can improve social connectedness in some cases, research finds that those who heavily use social media are at a higher risk for depression. Be mindful of how you use technology to support social connections in your life.
